About
About us

We’re UK non-profit charity organisation.

At Cancer Black Care (CBC), we believe that every individual, regardless of their background, deserves access to the best possible care and support when facing the challenges of cancer. Our mission is to provide dedicated assistance to Black people and People of Colour (POC) as they navigate their way through the journey of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

CBC was founded by Isaac Dweben in 1995, three years after the death of his elder brother from prostate cancer. Isaac had observed that there was a general lack of culturally specific advice and information available about cancer and its treatment and was struck by the very limited level of awareness about the condition amongst those from the Afro Caribbean community. He also realised that other marginalised groups were experiencing the same lack of sensitivity to their cultural and ethnic diversity and felt compelled to do something about it.

Our Mission

Creating a Nurturing Community

Cancer knows no boundaries, and neither do we. Our purpose is to bridge the gap in cancer care by addressing the unique needs faced by Black people and POC. We are, therefore, committed to the following:

  • Cultural Sensitivity: We understand that cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic factors can greatly influence the way in which a person experiences cancer. We provide culturally sensitive resources, support, and information to ensure that each individual receives personalised care that respects and adheres to their traditions and beliefs.
  • Accessible Support: We work tirelessly to eliminate barriers to cancer care for Black people and POC. Through advocacy and partnerships, we strive to ensure equitable access to screening, treatment, and support services.
  • Education and Awareness: We empower individuals with knowledge about cancer prevention and early detection. We promote awareness for Black people and POC, emphasising the importance of regular screenings and healthy lifestyles.
  • Emotional Support: A cancer diagnosis can be emotionally overwhelming. Here at CBC, we offer a network of empathetic counsellors and support groups with a view to creating a safe space for Black people and POC to share their experiences and find strength in one another.
  • Advocacy: We advocate for policies that promote equitable healthcare access and outcomes.
